Unassuming south Bristol pizza restaurant named one of best in UK at PAPA Awards
A pizzeria in south Bristol has been recognised as one of the best in the UK at a prestigious awards event. A cappella in Totterdown scooped a Gold Award at the PAPA Awards 2019, officially ranking it among the six best pizza-serving restaurants.
Since opening on Wells Road in 2007, the family-owned restaurant has quietly gone about its business and is seen as one of the best places to grab a pizza by the city’s most discerning fans of the dish – and this award is proof of that. Headed up by Paul Stewart and his wife Jennifer, A cappella serves authentic Neapolitan-style pizzas with the majority of ingredients sourced from Milan and Naples.
“We’ve had various accolades in the past but this one is really special as it’s an industry award and came completely out of the blue,” said 51-year-old Paul. “Even to get noticed and shortlisted by PAPA in the first place was a real pat on the back for us and we were very humbled to be given the award. “It’s great to get this kind of boost early on in the year and means we’ve had a really good start to 2020.”
Paul, who was trained by a pizza chef with 35 years of experience, said A cappella’s success is down to top quality ingredients and consistency. He is always in the kitchen along with three other chefs who have worked at the restaurant for years, which means customers can rest assured there will be no dip in quality.
“We’ve always stayed true to our ethos since opening. It’s really nice that we’re still being recognised despite the recent artisan pizza boom in the city,” he added. “We pay real attention to the quality of our ingredients, many of which are sourced from Italy, and have secret recipes for our dough and tomato sauce. “On top of that we treat our staff well to ensure we keep that consistency, and because we think it’s important that restaurant owners do so.”
Paul added a number of opportunities to open other restaurants across Bristol have arisen in the past but the couple have turned them down, not wanting to sacrifice quality at their inaugural site. Before serving top quality pizzas in the evening, A cappella doubles up as a café specialising in Mediterranean cuisine during the daytime.
